INFORMATION
|
|
| Text: Church History in the Fulness
of Times. You should also obtain Religion 343 student packet
(available in the Bookstore). |
|
| Final Grade: Will be based on 300 points
as follows: First and second exams, 50 points each; best five of seven
quizzes, 10 points each; final exam, 100 points; project, 50 points.
A maximum of 20 points of extra credit may be earned by completing
an additional project. Students earning 90% of maximum will receive
at least an A-, 80% a B-, etc. Attendance will also be a factor in
determining the grade. |
|
| Quizzes: They will be given without
prior notice and will cover material assigned for the day on which
they are given plus material from the previous class meeting. Of seven
to be given, two will be dropped. There will be no make-ups nor credit
given for quizzes missed due to absence or tardiness. |
|
| Exams: Exams will be basically objective
with an occasional brief essay question. The final exam will be comprehensive--including
questions from the beginning of the course. |
|
| Term Project: Complete one of the following
projects. It is due at or before the class meeting on the date shown
in the class calendar. |
| |
| A. Additional Reading. Read 300 pages from a biography,
regional history, or other work related to LDS developments since
1900. Make sure to do the following: (1) In a page or so, evaluate
the strengths and weaknesses of the works you read, and assess their
contribution to an understanding of the subject. (2) Include a list
of the items read, including author, title, and page numbers read.
(3) Attach notes you take; featuring key points, striking quotations,
or other items of special interest to you. |
|
| B. Research Paper on a
Specific Topic. Select a topic such as one of the following: The contributions
of a particular Latter-day Saint, history of a Church program or organization,
causes and impact of a given event, the development of the Church
or experience of the Saints in a selected geographical area, etc.
Check with Brother Cowan regarding your topic before beginning
research. After thorough research, type a well-documented
and carefully written paper of about 7-10
pages in length. Follow accepted
standards of style, format, citing sources, etc. |
|
| C. Other projects. Your
specific interests or talents may suggest a project other than one
of the above. For example, those with artistic or drafting ability
may wish to prepare charts or graphs that can be used in class. Those
interested in statistics could analyze trends and those who like to
work with their hands might construct small replicas, etc. Those doing
such projects should also submit a page or so, indicating how much
time was spent and summarizing their feelings about the project. Discuss
your ideas with Brother Cowan before proceeding. |
