The Story of my MissionThe Power of a Friend
|
Throughout all the work, trials and experiences something powerful and weird happens. One
day you begin to think, "Why am I here? Why am I doing all this walking? Why are there so many
challenges?" The main question is: "Why should I stay here?"
You notice His name on your name tag, and realize you are representing Him and really don't know Him. You tell people you are from His church, "the only true and living church." You enter in someone's house and tell him about the sacrifice Christ did for everyone. You tell him that "all are lost, all are fallen" if it weren't for Him and His sacrifice. You think, "I don't really know how He sacrificed for me." Depression comes as you realize, "In all my years in the church I never really got to know Him!" The desire to find out more about the man on your name tag increases. You read passages about the Good Samaritan and learn about the love Christ has for everyone. You read about the adulterous woman brought before Christ and he says, "Let him without sin throw the first stone." You read about the Prodical Son, and see how forgiving Jesus really is. In your Book of Mormon study you start marking the passages that talk about Christ. You find out that the Book of Mormon really is another testament of Jesus Christ. During your study your mind is illuminated with thoughts you take with you as you go to work. Then you enter in a house and start talking to one of your investigators. You look up at him, and you see him as a different person. His problems become your problems, and you really try and solve his problems. You see him as he really is, a son of God, loved by Christ. Yes, you begin to see people with the eyes of Christ. You see the members with the eyes of Christ as well. You want to help them out as well. You also look at your companion a little differently. All the annoying stuff he used to do seems to disappear. You want to be better friends with him. You want to help him out. Yes, you see him with the eyes of Christ and discover that everyone is a son of God, loved by Christ. You read passages about a marvelous work and wonder, and the importance of the work is understood a little more. Yes, the scriptures with the spirit truly become your guide. You, then, sit down in investigators' houses and you want to help him. You open your mouth and words flow and scriptures jump into your mind. When you leave, you think, "That's an important point I said. I don't know from where it came, but I think I better practice it in my life." Then the teacher not only teaches, but he also learns. You forget about home, time, and all other stuff, and your mind becomes focused on the work. Before you know it, you are almost ready to go home and realize, "Not only did I get to know Christ a little more, but I have begun to act like Him too." Yes, you learn to represent the man on your name tag and His true and living church. You are filled with a desire to continue to get to know Him and act like Him as you start the rest of your life. Doing this becomes your eternal challenge. © 2000 Christopher Slade |
